Nestled in northern England, amongst a cluster of neighbouring National Parks and AONBs, sits the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This sublime limestone landscape is home to a vast section of the Pennine Hills, fondly known as the “backbone of England” due to their position rising up the centre of the country. Spanning 841 square miles, the park boasts immense hill-views and sensational stargazing and was qualified as an International Dark Sky Reserve in 2020.

In the north of England lies the rolling hills and lush vales of the Peak District National Park. The landscape is split into the geologically distinct areas of the Dark Peak and the White Peak. The Dark Peak is dominated by moorland and grit sandstone whilst the White Peak forms sweeping limestone valleys and impressive gorges that have been eroded from the plateau. In both instances, the result is magnificent.

Snowdonia is the biggest National Park in Wales. It contains the highest mountain in the country, called Snowdon or “Yr Wyddfa” in Welsh, which rises 1,085 metres. Perched in the north of Wales, Snowdonia is famous for its dramatic mountainous landscape and epic glacial features, formed during the last ice age 10,000 years ago.

A strange yelping noise echoed up the cliffs to meet me. The noise rose and fell on the wind and sounded much like a crying baby.

This was no ordinary blister, from grit or a hot spot against my shoe. It was a compression blister, from pure exertion.
